Motley County is located to the south of the Texas panhandle and was created in 1876 from parts of Bexar County and Young County. It is named after a signatory of the Texas Declaration of Independence, Junius William Mottley, and is spelled incorrectly because the bill establishing the county misspelled his name. The county has a population of approximately 1,150 and the county seat is Matador, population approximately 600.
